Vyškov biomethane plant wins two awards in the Heroes of Modern Energy 2025 competition

The investment company Energy Financial Group (EFG) is celebrating success in the prestigious Heroes of Modern Energy 2025 competition. It won second place in the Renewable Sources for the Czech Economy category and the Expert Public Sympathy Award. The double award for the project Launch of biomethane production at the EFG Vyškov BPS, with which the company advanced to the finals, confirms its innovative approach to sustainable energy. The station is one of the few facilities in the Czech Republic capable of processing biodegradable waste into low-emission gas, electricity, and heat.

“Second place in the Renewable Resources for the Czech Economy category and winning the Expert Public Sympathy Award is a great recognition for us and confirmation that investing in projects focused on biomethane production is beneficial for society as a whole. By rebuilding our waste station in Vyškov, we were able to increase our processing capacity by more than half to 30,000 tonnes per year in just one year. From this waste, which would otherwise end up in landfills, we now produce gas with a minimal carbon footprint for nearly 2,000 households per year. This contributes not only to protecting the environment, but also to the Czech Republic’s energy self-sufficiency. None of this would be possible without our great team, whom I would like to thank, as well as the expert jury,” said Tomáš Voltr, CEO of EFG.

Projects that offer concrete and effective solutions for energy transformation have advanced to the final selection of the Heroes of Modern Energy competition. A panel of judges made up of two dozen experts, including Minister of Industry and Trade Lukáš Vlček and Minister of the Environment Petr Hladík, selected the winners in four main categories based on criteria such as sustainability, replicability, economic benefits, decarbonization, and local community involvement.

The winner of the expert public vote was the project Launch of biomethane production from biodegradable waste in Vyškov, which won the Sympathy Award with 448 votes out of a total of 1,117. The award-winning modernized EFG Vyškov BPS station is an example of the effective use of biodegradable waste to produce valuable biomethane. After thorough treatment, this environmentally friendly fuel is a fully-fledged part of the gas distribution network. The project in Vyškov builds on the proven operating model of the waste biogas station in Rapotín, with the innovative technologies implemented enabling even greater efficiency in waste processing and emission reduction.

The winners were announced at a ceremony held on May 28, 2025, at Forum Karlín in Prague, attended by Minister of Industry and Trade Lukáš Vlček, Director of the State Environmental Fund Petr Valdman, CEO of ČEZ ESCO, Chairman of the Modern Energy Union Kamil Čermák, and other key figures from the Czech energy sector and government. The Heroes of Modern Energy awards are a project funded by the Modern Energy Union and the Alliance for Energy Self-Sufficiency, and co-financed with support from the “From Plans to Reality: Renewable Chance for Future” project, supported by the European Climate Initiative (EUKI).
