The first phase of construction for the provision of balancing services at EFG Vyškov BPS is nearing completion

26. June 2025

The first phase of construction of a facility for providing power balancing services is nearing completion at the biomethane station in Vyškov. The construction part of the project has been completed, the utility networks have been laid, and the installation of a 12 MW electric boiler, including its peripheral equipment, is underway. The Energy Financial Group (EFG) is investing more than CZK 230 million in the project, which is expected to have a total capacity of 20 MW. It plans to launch all balancing services facilities by the end of the first quarter of 2026. The main goal is to reinforce the stability of the electricity grid.

Building with electric boiler

At the EFG Vyškov BPS site, the building intended for the electric boiler and heat management system is already clad and almost complete. It will be used for both the boiler itself and the cogeneration units that are to supplement the balancing services in Vyškov at the turn of 2025 and 2026. The Energy Financial Group is now preparing to install the electric boiler technology, including its peripheral equipment. At the same time, the administrative process of connecting to the distribution system, which is provided in this area by EG.D, is underway. An electrical substation and transformer station will be located next to the electric boiler building to ensure a safe and stable connection of the equipment to the distribution network.

“We are on track to complete the first phase of the balancing services project in Vyškov, whose key element is a 12 MW electric boiler, by the third quarter of 2025 as planned. At the end of the year, we plan to complete the installation of four natural gas cogeneration units, which will bring the total power balance service capacity to 20 MW. This will enable us to respond flexibly to the current needs of the distribution system and contribute to its overall stability,” says Martin Janda, Director of the EFG Production Division.

The aim of installing an electric boiler in the Vyškov waste biogas plant is to make effective use of surplus green energy and at the same time increase the overall energy efficiency of the network. The technology used will enable the rapid conversion of surplus electricity into heat and its distribution to external customers. “To ensure maximum utilization of thermal energy within the balancing services facilities at EFG Vyškov BPS, we also plan to install a storage tank,” adds Martin Janda. The total investment in technologies for providing power balancing services at the biogas plant in Vyškov, including the second phase, is expected to reach CZK 230 million.
